If you’re a skipper and you don’t have your sailboat rigged for sailing it single-handedly you can readily find eager, usually experienced crew at Single Mariners. Many of our skippers find it refreshing to put somebody else on the helm or have an knowledgeable first mate handle sail trimming. We welcome all sizes of boats. Our fleet has ranged from a 23 foot sloop to a 55 foot ketch.
Our meetings give you a way to assess potential crew before putting them on your boat. Unlike other social sailing clubs, we do not assign crew without your explicit approval. By coming to the meetings you get to pick your own, which means you can choose a range of sailors from those who know what they are doing to those who might be nothing more than an eye catching diversion. Once you've exchanged contact information with Single Mariners and found them to be good sailors, feel free to invite them to sail at other times of your choosing. Several of our skippers keep an active email list of potential crew and have found that their times on the water have increased substantially.
Single Mariners is a great way to find crew if you've ever considered racing. Several of our skippers do. What better time to test potential racing crew than on a day sail?
We urge every skipper to give new crew members a safety orientation before taking them out, including basics such as man overboard procedures, when your crew should wear PFDs, how to use the radio and what to say in case of an emergency. It happens. One PMYC member went MOB this past year on a trip to Catalina. He's alive today because his skipper spoke to his crew ahead of time.
Most of our skippers do not allow drinking on their boats when underway, but whether or not you let your crew drink alcohol while sailing is up to you.
Remember that Single Mariners meets the first and third Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM for socializing * followed by a light dinner. With its million-dollar view of the Marina del Rey boat basin, Pacific Mariners Yacht Club (PMYC) generously hosts the meetings at 13915 Panay Way Marina del Rey, California.
Although day sails through Santa Monica Bay, and to Redondo Beach are the focus of the club, we often tag along on Pacific Mariners' cruises to Catalina Island if invited by a PMYC member. For more information, email Commodore Alan Rock, a PMYC member.
*Due to the holidays, there is no second meeting in November or December.
